The smallest particle of an atom which take part in chemical reaction is called atom. Atom combine together to form a molecule. An atom is a very minute spherical particle with a diameter of approximately 0.0000000001m.

Sub-atomic particles
According to scientists,an atom has further smallest   sub-atomic particles.they are also called elementary particles. these sub-atomic particles are electron, proton and neutron.

Electrons are negatively charged particles which are always revolving round the nucleus of an atom.
the mass of an electron is 1/1837 of a hydrogen. it is denoted by (e-)

Protons are positively charged particle which is located at the nucleus of a atom. Its mass is equal to the mass of an atom of hydrogen. It is denoted by (p+).

Neutron is the chargeless particle which is situated at the nucleus of an atom. Its mass is equal to the mass of one proton or the mass of a hydrogen. It is denoted by (n0).

The atoms of all the elements have equal number of protons and electrons.
These positively charged particles and negatively charged particles neutralize the charges of each other. Thus, an atom is electrically neutral.
